Bromley Model United Nations | |
Strategy TipsKnow the issuesThe resolutions are identical in form, and similar in content, to the kinds of issues debated in the actual UN General Assembly in New York. Each resolution starts with preambular clauses explaining the issue. The substantive clauses are numbered and usually generate the strongest debate as countries tussle to protect their interests. Know your country's position on the issuesRead each resolution carefully to maximise the efficiency of your research and the efficacy of your debate. Remember, a successful Model UN depends on how accurately you represent the actual position of your country, not the position you would like them to take. Even if you find the policies of your country repugnant, the challenge is to represent that policy as convincingly as a government minister from that country would. (In reality government ministers would probably lose their ministerial positions if they showed disloyalty at the UN!). And don't forget to find out which nations your country is allied to - you could create powerful voting blocs with countries that share your interests (regional interests are sometimes outweighed by economic or political interests).
